Midlothian Community Gardens Update

Thanks to everyone for being so involved in the process of planning for the community gardens at the Midlothian Community Gardens: time and contributions much appreciated.

This is just a quick update on where we are in the process, and attached is a map of the plan of the gardens that has been developed based on your input.

The idea right now is to get the infrastructure – the hard surfaced path, the benches, the shelter and the toolshed - into place by early April. We will also buy some of the materials we will need for the garden going forward: seeds, compost, tools, plants, timber for the timber edged beds, and store that at the garden.

By mid-April the gardens should be open, with 2-3 drop in days per week and a garden coordinator to help people pitch in and get the plants in the ground! It will be the community as a whole which will decide what to plant, where the timber edged beds should be, etc: the garden will grow as the community wants it to (as long as the NHS and Robertsons are comfortable with proposed developments).

If you have time we’d love to hear any more feedback you might have. All feedback is welcome but we’d especially like to know if:

  • Are the three benches in the plans, plus the seating area that will be in the centre area enough, or do you think we should have more benches?
  • If you have time we’d love to hear any more feedback you might have. All feedback is welcome but we’d especially like to know if:
  • Are the three benches in the plans, plus the seating area that will be in the centre area enough, or do you think we should have more benches?
  • Are the three proposed passing places for wheelchairs (near the benches) enough, or do you think we should have more passing places?
  • Is having a sheltered area important to you? Yes/no
  • If having a sheltered area is important to you would you prefer:
  • a) one with four walls and a roof
    b) an open air structure with a
    roof and supports
  • Are there any days that you would prefer to be the Community Gardens’ drop in days?
